The added value above the many other tools available for this job might be the generation of on-the-fly checksums (md5) for both the input and output files.

It splits files into a fixed number of parts or into parts of fixed size (with presets for convenient splitting into DVD/CD sized parts).

Optionally the input can be compressed (gzip (RFC 1952)) before splitting. This is only useful with splitting to a fixed size, since the size of the parts is calculated by dividing the input file size by the number of desired parts anything can happen (if the input is uncompressible you may end up with more parts (there is some gzip protocol overhead) or less when the input is highly compressible). Give YAJFS a try to see what it's really capable of!
