Sony ATRAC3 Audio Codec was developed by Sony for its portable audio players.

The highest bit rate supported by Atrac3 is 132 kbps (which they say is superior to MP3 128 kbps) and supplies a decent quality.

For the best quality ATRAC3 files, you must convert the tracks directly from the audio CD.

ATRAC3 is a compression technology based on Sony's ATRAC (Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding) technology that originated with and is supported by MiniDisc. ATRAC3 achieves twice the data compression rate of ATRAC with virtually no loss in sound quality and reduces the size of audio data to 1/10 of the original audio CD source.

The audio compression technologies used by Sony will analyze the digital audio data and reduce its size by applying the newest digital audio technologies.

Compressing audio data provides real benefits:

It comes with a variety of mono and stereo audio formats to choose from depending on your network bandwidth.

It is also suitable for encoding mono voice-only content at extremely low bit-rates.

MetaVoice works far FAR better than MP3 and even WMA at very low bit rates. You can get very good speech quality at 2kbit/sec! (Note I said "bits" not "bytes" - you can't touch that with MP3.)

It'll do soundtrack noises pretty well too, although it can get muddy if there's too much going on.

Using the MetaSound codec and upping the bit rate to a whopping 8 or 16kbit/sec will fix this.

The best part is there are no restrictions on the Voxware codecs - you can use'em in pretty much anything and they'll play.

Shorten� (.shn) is an audio compression scheme that is used to compress audio (.wav) files losslessly.

This means that after you decompress a Shorten file, everything that was in the original .wav is there. This is unlike MP3, in which the compression step throws away information that can never be recovered.

For distribution and archiving purposes, the Shorten (.shn) files themselves can also be burned onto a CD-R as data.

One big advantage to archiving Shorten files is that you'll never have to deal with digital audio extraction (DAE) from an audio disc, which can sometimes produce clicks and other undesired artifacts.

The Shorten source code is the property of SoftSound Limited and has been made available to the general public for non-commercial use.

The original SoftSound code has been extended by etree.org (most notably by the work of Wayne Steilau and Jason Jordan) to include "seek-tables" so that you can easily skip to any portion of a song in audio players like WinAmp and XMMS.

For Windows users who wish to use a command line version of Shorten, you've come to the right place! When shortn32.exe is used along with the batch files, it's surprisingly robust and easy to use, minus all the bells and whistles of a graphical user interface.

You will want to replace your existing shortn32.exe file.

Musepack is an audio compression format with a strong emphasis on high quality.

It's not lossless, but it is designed for transparency, so that you won't be able to hear differences between the original wave file and the much smaller MPC file.

It is based on the MPEG-1 Layer-2 / MP2 algorithms, but has rapidly developed and vastly improved and is now at an advanced stage in which it contains heavily optimized and patentless code.
